Faith Based Environmental Initiatives in Canada

Joanne Moyer: The King's University

Canadian Yearly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends

About: The Quaker yearly meetings are a place where people gather in community and find belonging. They are offered all over Canada and act as a place to find insight, guidance, and inspiration. Individual Quakers do not share the same beliefs but they do hold to the same testimonies, which are truth, simplicity, equality, community and peace.

Research Note: Because I was unable to interview people from any of this organization, this information is gathered from websites only and is therefore incomplete.

Current Environmental Work:

  • The Canadian Yearly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends signed various statements, including:
    • Canadian Interfaith Call For Leadership And Action On Climate Change (2011) statement.
    • On Promoting Climate Justice and Ending Poverty in Canada: Faith Communities in Canada Speak Out (2015).
  • The Multifaith Peace, Justice and Earthcare Program for Young Adults focuses on peace and justice work, a relational understanding of creation and simplicity measures.
